How exactly did you go from talking about operating systems (Windows 3.1) to a computer brand (Compaq/Gateway)? I mean, it's like you think Compaq and Gateway ARE operating systems. By the way, I dare you to define the word NETWORK, bitch.

Sometimes I feel as if I am one of the only computer litterate people in my school. I am good at computers and not afraid to say I enjoy working on 'em. Of course everyone else in my school probally does not even know what an IP address is. And the computers in my school have a poorly secured network.
**thinks**
Does that make me a nerd?

hackers are 1337.
nerds are people that spend all their time on the computer and do stuff but never do it to any purpose other than to dink around.
hackers are totally awesome sweet people who use other people's ignorance of computers to their advantage. i.e. hacking, or taking advantage of vulnerabilities in Microsoft's operating systems

Hackers and people looking for Microsoft vulnerabilities are ruining the computer industry. I hate them. Hacking is only kool when it is to mess with your friends & for total revenge. I can understand why someone would wanna screw with computer illiterate,but.......ah what the hell am I talking about. As long as you are not messing up someones life hacking can be okay. Sometimes I wanna hack the people at my school who have no idea what a computer is beyong Instant Messaging & disney.com. But stop trying to cause cyber armagedon. Really it is just the people who actually try to make viruses & discover vulnerabilities and ruin peoples lifes because of it. People say Microsoft sucks. And for many reasons they are right. In fact most people do not know there other things like Linux out there. Hell I know a lot of people who say they know a lot about computers when they don't even know an IP address is. But anyway that is beyond the point. It is wrong to purposely try to do these things & cause the victim a lot of caos. Don't hack someone just because they are computer illiterate & then end up causing them to lose money. If you are going to hack someone for reasons other than revenge & messing with your friends...don't ruin their life.

decent point.
but hacking 'ruins'(i can't see much that it actually 'ruins', since i haven't seen companies going out of business in mass due to hacking/viruses) less lives than living in a world that has a free economy and where the will of the rich reigns. (even though one(in the form we know it) probably wouldn't exist without the other)
its what companies get for depending on something that is flawed. lets say, for example, you buy a car that has problems and is easy to mess up by, how about, putting a candy wrapper in the exhaust (i don't know much about cars), and then the car breaks down because of it. well, thats what you get for buying a piece of trash car.
it goes the same for software and operating systems.
i say it looks pretty damn bad on hackers and microsoft that the MSBLAST-type vulnerabilities weren't discovered back when WinNT was the only NT-Based OS. it was shotty programming on MS's part.
and the reason most viruses get out of hand is because PEOPLE DON'T UPDATE THEIR SOFTWARE, whether it be OS or Virus Protection.
nothing is perfect. cars go in for tune-ups/repairs. houses get repaired. businesses update their methods of management.
and you say its okay to prey on the ignorant. then wouldn't the users of a flawed operating system(and don't take measures to repair it when its available) BE the ignorant?

When my computer got looked over it had 3 viruses on it which could wipe the whole computer clean if ran.
Thats not the end of it. There were 4 trojan horse viruses on it too...
No wonder my password kept getting changed on random things and I had random people speaking to me on aol who I had never spoken to before aswell.
It's all fixed... wiped clean. Formatted.... new memory and modem (my last ones broked :()
My new lil compy is coming home tonight.. Woopie!

Microsoft has a lot of flaws, but hey they are working on it. Nobody is perfect. If people wanted they could find at least one flaw in anything computers. But the problem is people like the fat-ass who made the blaster worm are making it more difficult for Microsoft. More people are starting to discover Linux, but still some people are going to rely on Microsoft. I just wish these people who discover the flaws would stop making it so dang difficult for Microsoft. Bill Gates has less than 10 years left in his career....give him a break. If you want higher quality OS then stop trying to pick out every mistake in the latest ones. All I am trying to say is that there are people that because of them are in my opinion making it a lot more difficult for better products to be developed. Microsoft could make better products if they did not have to continuously deal with the people that are trying to mess the stuff up. And besides even when there are flaws.....your computer messing up is just part of the computing experience.:spin:
So if your going to exploit a new vulnerability why don't you think about that first?
Zmaster

the entire idea of making a newer product is for it not to have the problems/inadequecies of the previous. so finding vulnerabilities(which would be problems), is a GOOD thing, otherwise the new product would have nothing different than the old product.
and with the 'msblast' vulnerability, the more paranoid mind would suggest that the vulnerability was intentional. since only microsoft created the OS, only they would know about the vulnerability. hence, they could tap into your machine without your knowing. this could be applied to prevention of piracy of their software(which would greatly be to their advantage).
the way they would get this information would be through windows update(which records your IP(which they then could use to tap into your machine), and which operating system of theirs you use(thats how it knows which updates would apply to you)). they could then ask for legal/legit access to your machine, [which you would deny because you have something to hide], and then they would get a search warrant and you know where that would lead(charges, court, fun fun fun). they would double their profit from all of the money they'd make off of court cases.
of course, that would be an extremely paranoid perspective, and attributes waaaay too much intelligence to that greedy corporation.

Okay I did not fully state what I meant by people finding vulnerabilities. I meant the ones who use them for bad purposes.
